Commentary
Welcome, Sai Mecha fans! This is your commentator ExecutiveOtaku. I’ll have to keep my remarks brief this time as I’m in the midst of a rapid scramble for relocation comparable in intensity only to the Battle of Aboa A Qu. The Big O proved itself to be just a little too much even for all of Exia’s blades, while in the next competition the iconic workhorse of Zeon won out over the Master Gundam. The Deathscythe, a favorite among many Wing fans, lost out to the innovative design and near-magical Newtype link of the Zeta Gundam. Meanwhile in the fantasy super-robot arena the Escaflowne dealt a crushing blow to the idol singer of mecha, the RahXephon. Macross fan came away from the bittersweet win-loss of the Earth Side with a victory for the YF-19 over a tough as nails oldschool challenger in the form of Mazinger Z. The Scopedog pushed itself over the top against the Alteisen in a victory of simple, practical design over the bulky, powerful hero mecha. In an outcome everyone saw coming, the Gurren Lagann won its first match by a solid margin. I’d bet good money on that super robot making it to the semi-finals. Finally the Arbalest sent the Nirvash into a Full Metal Panic with its win. You could even say that the Eureka 7 fans have been surfed (SERVED, errr, SURFED SURFED SURFED!) Or that their board-riding mecha has been u-surfed. Also, “ahahahaha, wipeout!” [I kid, I kid. But it’s too easy when the robot rides a surf board of all things.]

In the bonus round, well, I can’t say that I’m not disappointed. When he’s up against such beautiful competition, AND he’s a fan of that wretched Nekki Basara, well my friends I just can’t imagine what the voters were thinking. Sally, you’ll always be my favorite.

Can’t say I am surprised by most of results, although I voted for RahXephon, I knew he would be easily defeated.
Actually there was one instance that surprised me, I wasn’t expecting Nirvash to lose, I was always under impression that Eureka 7 was more popular than FMP not to mention Nirvash being more memorable than Arbalest, oh well.
Glad to see Bobby won, after all he is a FABULOUS character

I’d argue that only applies on a superficial level, since Nirvash’ magic powers were far better justified within the series than Arbalest’s. And if nothing else, at least it has a more memorable design and gimmicks.
I distinctly remember someone in the first series (was it gauron?) saying to sousuke something to the effect of “isn’t it stupid that these robots are basically like magic?”
First of all, it’s nice to see that over-hyped Exia go down to Big O (& not Scirocco’s ugly fat boy The Big O, either). It tore my heart up to see my two fave mecha designs go head to head, but I’m glad to see my Zeta move on. And like everyone else, I’m a bit surprised that the TypeZero lost. I expected that hippy machine to be one of the contenders. The Arbalest had an awesome name, but I was never in love with the design.

Seriously though, how did you not expect the iconic Zaku II and the Macross fan-favorite YF-19 to do well? (The Arbalest was a surprise to me though, even though I voted for it as an anti-E7 vote :3 )
Far more western fans have fond memories of Macross Plus than they do of original Mazinger or Shin, JoeQ. Hence these results. That said, these people are WRONG WRONG WRONG!

Sorry dude, I wanted to see either Master vs. God in this tournament, or Zaku II vs. Scopedog. When I saw that G Gundam was up against Gurren Lagann, my dreams were dashed, and I plumped for my second dream matchup instead.
If its any consolation, we BOTH know Master Asia could kick the shit out of ANY of the pilots of these mechs. Just a shame we’re doing SaiMecha, and not SaiPilot. And I voted for Mazinger! 😦 Manly tears, man. On the plus side, Big O crushed the Exia beneath its mighty feet! SUPER ROBOTS BANZAI!

The Nirvash is a surfing mecha that turns into a car. Real mechas fly and turn into badass planes. Not a tough decision at all.
But Nirvash also flys and turns into a plane!
But that’s the spec 2. If we want to include the other variations, we have to include the atrocious 3rd forms the damn thing has. God its ugly when it grows up.
And so Big O rightfully crushes that sorry excuse for a real robot, and by an acceptable margin. Not surprised that G Gundam lost to GL, but since Master Gundam joined him, I can accept the result. If the both of them couldn’t make it together in the finals, and fight HEAD TO HEAD FOR THE TITLE OF “GUNDAM ZA GUNDAMS”, I’d rather have neither of them. They’re a package deal for me. 🙂
Unfortunately, the match-ups would seem to rule out my dream match of Scopedog vs. Zaku II, but at least they both made it. Arbalest was a surprise upset, and I was shocked to see how utterly crushed RahXephon was by Escaflowne. I guess the fandoms for either show regard their series with a different level of fondness e.g. E fans love it still, R fans hate the crazy Gainax ending.
Looking at the coming fights, GR is likely to fall to the Tachikoma (MOE IS THE CANCER KILLING SAIMECHA, etc.), Eva 1 vs. Gunbuster should be interesting, and Big O vs. Zaku II should be close. YF-19 vs. Scopedog is going to be an utter curbstomp, but that’s okay, ’cause Chirico will jump out from the wreckage and just hijack the Valkyrie from Isamu. 🙂
Sad to have no Mazinger in the finals, but hey, there’s always next year! And SKL as a design doesn’t do much for me, devil wings and two pilot system aside. And to anyone thinking of voting for the Sinaju, just be aware that you are a filthy goddamn Space Nazi, and also simultaeneously a Space Communist (The tip off? Red paint job). You also think muttonchops are a cool hairstyle.
I feel it fair to warn you that RETURNING TO LIGHT can be a dampener on your social life, especially when you ARE VANQUISHED BY THE KING OF BRAVES, GOD OF DESTRUCTION, EARTH’S MIGHTY FIGHTING MECHANOID…GAO GAI GAR!!!
How could anyone possibly hate the “crazy Gainax ending” of RahXephon?
I suppose that’s not a fair question, but what I mean is:
How could somebody have the knowledge to realize that it has a Gainax ending, but not have seen the fact that RahXephon is a very intentional “clone” of Evangelion (and know that this necessarily entails a crazy mindfuck ending) from the very beginning? The show copies scenes from Eva shot for shot just to drive home the parallels between the two. (Plus it’s by Bones, and they have a such a great track record with endings, but that’s another story.)
If a person hated RahXephon’s ending and hadn’t seen Evangelion, I could understand hating it for being a mindfuck. But, realistically, how many people voting in SaiMecha who have seen RahXephon haven’t seen Evangelion?
Anyway, even though I love Escaflowne (and voted for it over the ugly-ass title mech from RX), I would contend that Escaflowne’s ending is waaaaayyy shittier than RahXephon’s.
RahXephon’s ending: “Fuck you EvaDad, a clone of Shinji CAN get the girl and make a better world in an unambiguous fashion if he just stops being such a bitch!”
Escaflowne’s ending: “Let’s resolve all of the love triangle problems just in time to imply that the two lovers will never see each other again FOR NO ADEQUATELY EXPLORED REASON. Viewers love that tragic romance shit, right?!”
Apologies for the rant, but I really hated Escaflowne’s ending.
In all fairness, I have seen neither of those three shows. I was stereotyping to an amazing degree, and accordingly pulling facts out of my ass. I apologise for this.
Still, the appearance of a Gainax ending is immensely frustrating, almost enough for many fans to taint their love of a series (I was the same with Big O) irrevocably. And while dumb, Escaflowne at least has a conventional ending eg. One that doesn’t break the veiwer’s brain, and is confusing for the sake of being so.
Right, but my point is that RahXephon could never have had anything but a Gainax ending, and this was clear from the start. I’m surprised anybody’s angry about the Gainax ending that they almost HAD to see coming a million miles away. That’s like standing in front of a train, turning, seeing the train, not getting off the track despite being perfectly capable of it, and then complaining that you got hit by a train! Of course you got hit by a train!
Whereas Escaflowne’s extremely dissatisfying ending really DID come out of left field with no prior indication, and was confusing and jarring (the behavior of the characters, if not the specific events) basically for the sake of being so.
Have to agree with this. RahXephon does have a Gainax ending, but at least it’s a GOOD Gainax ending (unlike, say, Gasaraki…).
Escaflowne’s ending OTOH is just completely shitty. The sickening power of love conquers all! Oh, and now I’m just going to go back to my world and we’ll never see each other again. THE END.

Well, I’ve always thought that exaggerated rage is the best response when arguing about cartoon robot ;).
Think of TTGL what you will. I just fail to see how anyone could consider the Arbalest to be a superior design. Compared to the fairly similar Nirvash, MAYBE, but most certainly not GL.
Grunt suits just eking out the win, barely. Scopedog and Arbalest just scraping out the victory there.
Also the selection of Bobby Margot is not just a victory for him, it’s a testament to TOLERANCE and DIVERSITY.
